CLIMATE CHANGE IS NO LONGER A DEBATE. IT’S A BUSINESS FACTOR.
It’s nearly impossible to overstate the threat of climate change. The science is clear. We need to significantly reduce our CO2 emissions, or we will face catastrophic climatic challenges.
Climate change is no longer a threat to just the environment. It threatens livelihoods too. So this is not just about sustaining the environment. This is about sustaining businesses.
The largest 500 global companies, for example, generate in aggregate, more than 2.5 gigatonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year, more than any country on the planet except for the US and China. More than 75% of these emissions are generated by just 38 of the most carbon-intensive of these companies in the Fortune 500 list.
Businesses can influence in the world. They influence energy consumption of billions of people around the globe; fuel efficiency of almost every vehicle on the planet; practices of other companies across their value chain; policy development processes; investment decisions made across the globe.
Companies have a responsibility and the potential to stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution. Reducing CO2 emissions can no longer be a debate for the business sector.
It’s a business factor. And it makes good business sense.
